Caring for your employees means mapping out what to do during life’s big milestones. If you’re a business owner, what’s the MO when a team member is expecting? That’s what the Women 2.0 blog set out to determine, asking a number of business owners like myself what we do. I crafted a plan with my team to make sure expecting employees had the support (and time off!) they needed. As a first-time parent myself, I really get how there’s a lot of uncertainty with a newborn.

Ultimately, everyone’s experience is unique. Health issues, various care environments, and other factors play a role. Approach each parental leave plan with the employee in mind. You’ll need to get someone to cover their work for a reasonable amount of time, and that means a team effort.

Other business owners suggest adopting a flexible approach, while another usually sticks to four months “with some flexibility.” You can see a recurring theme here! It’s impossible to expect all employees to stick to a stringent leave plan because you never know what might pop up.
