Father’s Day is almost here, and there’s no reason you need to overspend—or spend at all!—on the special day earmarked for the fathers in your life. The Simple Dollar has compiled eight fantastic freebie ideas with the input of financially savvy dads, including myself. So many celebrations center around food, including dining out, and while that can be great I’d often prefer to do something active with my loved ones. Going for a run, walk or a drive is a great way to slow down and really appreciate time with your partner and kids. I love going for walks with my dad. It’s a time when we can share and experience time together. I’ve continued this tradition with my own kids, too, making it an electronics-free tradition.

Another fantastic idea is compiling favorite photos over the year into a real, tangible album. E-photos are great, but there’s something about holding those memories in your hands. You likely have old photos around the house already, and it’s simple to put them together (little ones can decorate the makeshift cover).

Hosting a surprise party for Dad will really delight him, too!
