Mistakes on social media are sure to be made, but when it’s your business’ social media site you need to be extra careful! That’s why the Young Entrepreneur Council asked myself and 12 other social media experts what the biggest mistakes are. I agree with my colleagues, who list posting too much and forgetting to listen as their top concerns. Post too much and you monopolize a person’s feed, and if you use social media as a soapbox instead of a conduit for conversation, you’re going to turn people off, too. However, for me it was outsourcing my social media management to a foreign company that was my biggest misstep.

Foreign companies simply can’t truly know the vibe of your company and community. If you do need to outsource, look for a local company—preferably one in your city. Getting addicted to a single platform can also be dangerous, as another entrepreneur points out. You’re putting all your SM eggs in one basket, and that’s asking for trouble.

You also want to avoid depending solely on text because visuals (videos and photos) are a big part of your social media strategy.
