The Young Entrepreneurial Council (YEC) was featured on the Business Collective, featuring insight into how to text professionally. I’m happy to be included, and took this opportunity to share my best texting advice (pro or otherwise): Use more than one word! You might think texting “yes,” “no,” “maybe,” or “k” is being succinct, but it comes off as rude. Will emojis help? Maybe in your personal life, but it instantly makes you look unprofessional with a client.

You never know if, when, or how your texts will be judged by a client. Avoid text speak, and make sure you proofread and use proper punctuation when applicable. Tips from others include putting a personal touch, and aiming to build a relationship before you move to text. Also, make sure that you keep things legal. Don’t spam them, and remember that just because someone has given you their cell phone number doesn’t legally mean you can text them about everything.

Put quality above all else, and use texting as one of many tools. Use it sparingly. It might not be the right tool for every client relationship, so tread carefully.
