“I hated my last job.” That’s the worst thing you could say during an interview—and that’s exactly what I shared with Monster. This is especially true if you had “legal issues” with previous employers. Specifically, you don’t want to bring up that you sued your last employer. Sound out there? I just interviewed someone who decided to share their sexual harassment lawsuit details with me. Regardless of who was at fault, I don’t want to bring that mess into my company.

Other experts warn against calling the job a “stepping stone” because it shows that you’re either eager to move on or think you’re too good for the job. Asking about vacation time or other perks during a first interview is also a turn off. This is when you should be selling yourself, not finding out what you can get.

It’s just as important to know what not to say as it is to tuck away nuggets of good interview tips. Always have a clean joke on hand (some employers ask!) and research the company well so you’re informed and can ask thoughtful questions.
