Startups.co offers some great tips on optimizing your business—starting with your employees. If your employees are consistently learning, your business is consistently improving. Plus, it can be offered as a benefit that draws and keeps the best candidates to your company. When asked by Startups.co, I shared my favorite tip: Give them $1,000 and five work hours per week for whatever project they like. The catch? It has to be a startup within the startup.

It encourages innovation, creativity, and for employees to take a real interest in the company. It also shows trust. Other entrepreneurs recommend creating an education/growth requirement. Certification can be a great tool, and you’ll be growing the collective knowledge of the group at the same time. Some companies offer a continuing education budget, especially in situations where roles might be changing quickly.

Maybe a “creativity stipend“ is more your speed, with some companies offering a few hundred per year for employees to use on creative growth such as a Photoshop, track, or even a painting class. Building skills across the board often complement what you’re trying to achieve with your business. From asking workers to contribute to the company blog to nourishing failures, there are many ways to prioritize learning on the job.
